I think this is one of the most important macro-development debates emerging right now. Read a couple of recent NBER working papers around this issue .The demographic arithmetic — especially the worker-to-retiree ratios you present — is forcing a reckoning around migration and labor mobility (politically explosive!), pensions, productivity, and more. We may end up in the strange equilibrium of labor scarcity in ageing economies coexisting with large pools of underemployed labor elsewhere. Could restrictions on labor mobility become one of the defining inefficiencies of this century? I am afraid so!
